Observers & Radio Operator

Surf Life Saving Queensland (RTO 2804)

Course Description

Got an eagle eye but no desire to enter the water? Be part of a team and stay dry on the beach.


The aim of the Observers course is to develop your knowledge of surf awareness and skills which will enable you to be able to read the surf, identify potential risks and hazards in the surf and identify persons in difficulty in the surf.


This Radio Operators Award gives participants the skills and knowledge to operate communications systems and equipment in surf lifesaving operations. Successful completion will allow the candidate to obtain a statement of attainment that includes the unit of competency "PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment" issued through Surf Life Saving Queensland (RTO 2804).

Observers assessment includes two tasks:

  • Assessment Task 1 – Online theory questions 

  • Assessment Task 2 – Practical demonstration of signals


Radio Operator assessment includes:

  • Theory Questions

  • Pracitcal demontration of radio maintenance (pre-use/post-use checks) and correct use of radio equipment


  • For these awards to remain current candidates must perform an annual skills maintenance activity at a Queensland Club between 01 July and 31 December of each year.

  • Please note that if you gain your award after 01 July then you are not required to attend a skills maintenance until the following year

To act as an observer on patrol you will also complete the radio operator certificate. 


To complete the observers and radio operators awards, you must be a financial member who is 13+ years of age. You can join the club online or contact the office.


If you are 18 years or older you will also require a Blue Card details are on the SLSQ website
